Check my CV against a management accountant advert

Management accountants produce the numbers a business is run on: monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts and the analysis behind them. Unlike statutory reporting, management accounting is for internal decision-makers, so your CV needs to show both technical accuracy and an understanding of what those decision-makers need.

What employers look for

  • Month-end ownership. Journals, accruals and prepayments, reconciliations and the management pack, delivered to deadline.
  • Costing knowledge. In manufacturing and some service businesses: standard costing, stock valuation, product and job costing.
  • Budgeting and forecasting. Supporting or owning the budget for your area.
  • Explaining the numbers. Variance analysis with commentary non-finance managers understand.
  • Qualification. CIMA is the classic route; ACCA and ACA are equally accepted. Many roles suit part-qualified candidates.

A typical advert, decoded

A paraphrased example of what management accountant adverts usually say, and what each line is really asking for.

The advert saysWhat it really means
"Produce monthly management accounts"You'll own the pack for at least one entity or division. Show your deadline record.
"Balance sheet reconciliations"They want a clean ledger. Mention historical balances you've cleared.
"Standard costing and stock valuation"It's a manufacturing role. Costing experience will be tested at interview.
"Variance analysis and commentary"You'll explain results to operations managers in plain English.
"CIMA or ACCA, part-qualified or qualified by experience"They'll consider strong experience without the full qualification. Say where you are.

Example CV profile

CIMA-qualified management accountant in food manufacturing. I produce the monthly management accounts for two sites with a combined £45m turnover, run standard costing and stock valuation, and present margin analysis to the operations team. I've reduced our month-end timetable by two days and introduced a monthly yield report that has helped cut waste by 6%.

Example achievements

Swap in your own numbers.

  • Delivered monthly management accounts for two manufacturing sites to a working-day-four deadline, every month for two years.
  • Reviewed and updated standard costs for 300 product lines, correcting a stock valuation understatement of £140k before year-end.
  • Introduced a weekly yield and waste report that supported a 6% reduction in raw material waste.
  • Took over the balance sheet reconciliations for 60 accounts and cleared £80k of unexplained historical balances.
  • Built the overhead budget for a £12m cost base with eight budget holders.
  • Automated the intercompany reconciliation in Excel, saving half a day each month.

Common mistakes

  • Listing tasks everyone does. Every management accountant does journals and reconciliations. Say what was different about how you did them.
  • No sense of size. Turnover, entity count and number of cost centres help the reader place you.
  • Sector-blind applications. Costing matters in manufacturing; deferred income and project accounting matter in services and SaaS. Lead with whichever the advert cares about.
  • Burying the qualification. Put "CIMA qualified" or "ACCA finalist" in the first line.

Interview questions to prepare for

  • Walk me through your month-end process from day one.
  • How do you decide what level of variance is worth investigating?
  • Explain standard costing and how you'd deal with a large purchase price variance.
