Management accountant interviews mix technical questions on month-end and costing with questions about how you explain numbers to the business. Many employers set a practical test: a set of journals, a reconciliation or a short variance analysis. In manufacturing roles, expect detailed questions on standard costing and stock.
Technical questions
1. Walk me through your month-end process from day one.
Why they ask: It's the backbone of the role.
A strong answer covers: cut-off, accruals and prepayments, reconciliations, review, the management pack and commentary, with the working day each happens and where the pinch points are.
2. What's the difference between an accrual and a prepayment? Give an example of each.
Why they ask: A fundamental check of your double entry.
A strong answer covers: an accrual as a cost incurred but not yet invoiced (such as an unbilled utility), a prepayment as a cost paid in advance (such as annual insurance), and the journals for both.
3. Explain standard costing and how you'd investigate a large purchase price variance.
Why they ask: Essential in manufacturing roles.
A strong answer covers: standard costs as expected costs per unit, variances as the gap to actual, and checking supplier prices, exchange rates, purchase volumes and whether the standard itself is out of date.
4. How do you decide which variances to investigate?
Why they ask: Time is limited at month-end.
A strong answer covers: materiality thresholds, unusual trends, anything affecting the forecast, and judgement about what managers will ask.
5. How would you value stock at month-end?
Why they ask: Stock errors can move profit significantly.
A strong answer covers: the valuation basis (standard, FIFO or average cost), counts and reconciliation to the ledger, provisions for slow-moving or obsolete stock, and overhead absorption.
6. Gross margin has fallen two points. Where would you look?
Why they ask: It tests analytical thinking.
A strong answer covers: sales price, product and customer mix, input costs, waste or yield, stock adjustments and one-off items, then confirming with operations and sales.
Competency questions
7. Tell me about a time you found a significant error.
Why they ask: They want honesty and control.
A strong answer covers: how you found it, who you told and when, the correction, and the check you introduced afterwards.
8. Describe a reporting process you improved.
Why they ask: Improvement is valued over maintenance.
A strong answer covers: the problem in time or errors, what you changed (often automation in Excel or a system report), and the measurable result.
9. How would you explain a margin decline to a non-finance manager?
Why they ask: Management accounts exist for non-finance readers.
A strong answer covers: the headline in plain words, the operational causes they'll recognise, and what they can do about it.
10. Tell me about a time you had to meet a tight reporting deadline.
Why they ask: Month-end deadlines are fixed.
A strong answer covers: prioritising, using estimates sensibly, communicating early, and delivering on time without sacrificing accuracy.
Motivation and fit questions
11. Where are you with your qualification, and how do you manage study alongside work?
Why they ask: Many roles suit part-qualified candidates.
A strong answer covers: exams passed, your plan to finish, and how you've balanced study with month-end before.
12. Why management accounting rather than financial accounting?
Why they ask: They want genuine interest in the role.
A strong answer covers: enjoying working with the business, influencing decisions and understanding operations, not just producing figures.
