Financial accountant CV
What UK employers look for in a financial accountant CV: the statutory and audit keywords to include, an example profile, achievements and interview questions.
Check my CV against a financial accountant advertFinancial accountants are responsible for the accuracy of a business's books and its external reporting: the general ledger, balance sheet, statutory accounts and the audit. Where management accounting looks inward, financial accounting is about getting the numbers right for auditors, lenders, HMRC and Companies House. Your CV should signal technical rigour and reliability.
What employers look for
- Balance sheet strength. Reconciliations, accruals and prepayments, fixed assets and a clean ledger.
- Statutory reporting. Preparing or supporting year-end accounts under FRS 102 or IFRS.
- Audit experience. Preparing audit files and handling auditor queries.
- Compliance. VAT returns, and sometimes corporation tax computations with advisers.
- Groups. Intercompany, consolidations and multi-currency for larger businesses.
ACA, ACCA or CIMA, or part-qualified with relevant experience, is normal. ACA and ACCA are particularly well suited because of their financial reporting depth.

A typical advert, decoded
A paraphrased example of what financial accountant adverts usually say, and what each line is really asking for.
| The advert says | What it really means |
|---|---|
| "Prepare statutory accounts under FRS 102" | Name the framework you've used. It's often a filter. |
| "Lead the audit" | You'll prepare the audit file and handle auditor queries. |
| "Balance sheet ownership" | They want a clean balance sheet. Mention reconciliation improvements. |
| "Intercompany and consolidation" | Group experience is needed. State how many entities. |
| "VAT and corporation tax support" | You'll prepare returns or work with tax advisers. |
Example CV profile
ACCA-qualified financial accountant in a three-entity UK group with £50m turnover. I own the balance sheet, intercompany and consolidation, prepare the statutory accounts under FRS 102 and lead the audit fieldwork. Since joining I've cleared a backlog of unreconciled balances and the last two audits completed with no adjustments.
Example achievements
Use your own figures.
- Prepared statutory accounts under FRS 102 for three entities; the last two audits completed on schedule with no adjustments.
- Cleared £220k of historical unreconciled balances across 40 balance sheet accounts within six months.
- Introduced a monthly intercompany reconciliation process that eliminated year-end consolidation differences.
- Took over quarterly VAT returns for three entities under Making Tax Digital, with no errors raised by HMRC.
- Rebuilt the fixed asset register for 1,200 assets ahead of an audit, correcting a £90k depreciation overstatement.
- Documented year-end procedures and trained an assistant accountant to prepare the first draft of audit files.
Common mistakes
- Not naming the reporting framework. FRS 102, FRS 105 or IFRS is a frequent filter for recruiters.
- No audit outcomes. A clean audit, on time, is one of the best proof points you have.
- Omitting group complexity. Number of entities, currencies and consolidations helps a reader see your level.
- Treating it as a management accountant CV. If the advert is about the balance sheet and stat accounts, lead with those.
Interview questions to prepare for
- Walk me through how you prepare for a year-end audit.
- How do you approach a balance sheet reconciliation that doesn't agree?
