You'll support the month-end, run reconciliations, post journals and help with VAT and the audit, usually while studying AAT, ACCA or CIMA. Hiring managers know you're early in your career. They're looking for accuracy, reliability, system confidence and evidence that you're developing quickly.
What employers look for

Example CV profile
AAT-qualified assistant accountant studying ACCA (four exams passed), with two years in a busy multi-site hospitality business. I post month-end journals, prepare accruals and prepayments, run daily bank reconciliations across six accounts and prepare quarterly VAT returns in Xero. I've automated our supplier statement reconciliation in Excel and I'm looking to take on more management accounts work.
State your qualification stage precisely ("four ACCA exams passed", "AAT Level 4"). Recruiters often filter on it.
Example achievements
Replace with your own figures.
- Ran daily bank reconciliations across six accounts with no unreconciled items at month-end for 12 consecutive months.
- Built an Excel template that matched supplier statements to the purchase ledger, cutting a two-day task to half a day.
- Prepared quarterly VAT returns for review, submitted under Making Tax Digital with no corrections needed.
- Posted month-end accruals and prepayments for 15 cost centres to a working-day-three deadline.
- Prepared the fixed asset and accruals audit schedules, with no queries raised by auditors on either.
- Cleared a three-month backlog of unmatched supplier invoices after a system migration.
Common mistakes
- Vague study status. "Studying ACCA" could mean one exam or twelve. Be specific.
- Not naming systems. Sage, Xero and SAP are common filter terms. List the ones you've actually used.
- Only listing duties. Even at this level, accuracy, deadlines met and processes improved are results.
- Missing transferable experience. Earlier roles in admin, retail or customer service still show reliability. Keep them short, but keep them.
Interview questions to prepare for
- Talk me through a bank reconciliation. What would you do with an unreconciled item?
- What's the difference between an accrual and a prepayment? Give an example of each.
- How do you make sure your journals are accurate?
