Finance director interviews often run over several rounds with a search firm, the CEO, the chair and sometimes investors. Technical competence is assumed. The questions focus on strategy, judgement, relationships and the impact you've had. Expect to be asked for a view on the business itself, so study its accounts and any public information before you go in.

Strategic questions

1. What has been your biggest contribution to strategy in your current role?

Why they ask: They want a partner to the CEO, not just a head of reporting.

A strong answer covers: a strategic decision you shaped, the analysis behind it, how you influenced the board, and the outcome in value or growth.

2. Based on our published accounts, what stands out to you?

Why they ask: It tests preparation and commercial judgement.

A strong answer covers: two or three observations about margin, cash, growth or funding, framed as questions you'd want to explore rather than verdicts.

3. How would you approach our next three-year plan?

Why they ask: FDs own the financial side of strategy.

A strong answer covers: aligning on strategic goals, building driver-based plans with the leadership team, scenario testing, and linking the plan to funding and cash.

Funding and investor questions

4. How have you managed lenders or investors when performance was behind plan?

Why they ask: Trust is tested when results are poor.

A strong answer covers: early, honest communication, a clear recovery plan, regular updates, and how the relationship came through it.

5. Walk me through a deal you led.

Why they ask: Many FD roles involve acquisitions, raises or refinancing.

A strong answer covers: the rationale, due diligence findings, valuation or terms, the negotiation, integration, and what you'd do differently.

6. How do you think about the right level of debt for a business like ours?

Why they ask: Capital structure is a core FD judgement.

A strong answer covers: cash flow stability, covenant headroom, the cost of capital, growth plans, and the owners' appetite for risk.

Leadership questions

7. Tell me about a time you disagreed with the CEO.

Why they ask: Boards want independent judgement, handled constructively.

A strong answer covers: the issue, your reasoning, how you raised it, how it was resolved, and the relationship afterwards.

8. How would you build the finance team here over the next two years?

Why they ask: FDs shape the function.

A strong answer covers: understanding today's team and gaps first, the capabilities the strategy needs (FP&A, systems, controls), and a sensible hiring or development sequence.

9. How have you improved a finance function's systems and processes?

Why they ask: Many businesses need modernising.

A strong answer covers: the starting point, the business case, the implementation, and the result in speed, insight or cost.

10. What responsibilities beyond finance have you taken on?

Why they ask: FDs often cover IT, legal, HR or property.

A strong answer covers: what you led, how you approached an area outside your expertise, and the outcome.

Personal questions

11. Why this business, and why now?

Why they ask: They want commitment to their stage and ownership model.

A strong answer covers: what attracts you about their plans, how your experience fits their stage, and what you'd want to have achieved in three years.

12. What would your current CEO say is your biggest weakness?

Why they ask: Self-awareness matters at board level.

A strong answer covers: a genuine development area, how it has shown up, and what you do about it.
