Financial controller interviews are usually led by the finance director or CFO, sometimes with the CEO or an investor in a later round. Expect technical depth on reporting, controls and the audit, plus questions on leadership and change. Some processes include reviewing a set of accounts or a control scenario.

Technical questions

1. How do you approach the year-end audit?

Why they ask: A clean audit is one of the controller's main deliverables.

A strong answer covers: a planning meeting with the auditors, an agreed list of schedules with owners and dates, resolving judgemental areas early, managing queries centrally, and a debrief afterwards.

2. Tell me about a control weakness you found and how you fixed it.

Why they ask: Controls are at the heart of the role.

A strong answer covers: how it came to light, the risk it created, the fix (policy, system or segregation of duties), and how you checked it worked.

3. What technical accounting issue have you dealt with recently?

Why they ask: Controllers must reach and defend technical judgements.

A strong answer covers: the issue (such as revenue recognition, leases or a provision), the standard involved, how you reached a view, and how you documented it for the auditors.

4. How do you run a group consolidation?

Why they ask: Many controller roles cover several entities.

A strong answer covers: intercompany reconciliation and elimination, consistent policies across entities, foreign currency translation, and a consolidation timetable.

5. How would you speed up our month-end close?

Why they ask: Faster closes are a common goal.

A strong answer covers: mapping the current timetable, moving work before month-end, automating accruals and reconciliations, clear ownership, and changing one thing at a time.

6. How do you manage cash in a business under pressure?

Why they ask: Controllers often own the cash forecast.

A strong answer covers: a rolling 13-week cash forecast, working capital levers (debtors, creditors, stock), early communication with the bank, and tight payment controls.

Leadership questions

7. How do you manage a team through a tight close?

Why they ask: Controllers lead teams under pressure.

A strong answer covers: clear plans and priorities, being visible and available, removing blockers, and recognising the team's effort afterwards.

8. Tell me about someone you developed into a stronger role.

Why they ask: Team development is part of the job.

A strong answer covers: where they started, what you gave them, how you supported them and where they are now.

9. Describe a system implementation you led. What would you do differently?

Why they ask: Many controller roles involve a new ERP or process overhaul.

A strong answer covers: scope, data migration, testing, parallel running, training, and an honest lesson learned.

10. Tell me about a time you disagreed with your finance director.

Why they ask: They want independent judgement, handled well.

A strong answer covers: the issue, the evidence you brought, how you raised it privately and respectfully, and how it was resolved.

Fit questions

11. What would you look at first in our finance function?

Why they ask: It tests how you'd approach their situation.

A strong answer covers: understanding the close, controls, audit history and team before changing anything, and naming likely early priorities based on what you've heard.

12. Why a controller role, and where do you want to go next?

Why they ask: Many controllers aim for finance director.

A strong answer covers: what you want to master in this role and how it prepares you for the next step, without sounding like you'll leave in a year.
